George - No problem :). I actually love the eclectic look of your site's design, but I can never quite get my way around as easily as I'd like to. I thought I'd play this post safe by only picking on blogs that I actually like apart from a few niggling things.

Daniel - I suspect you're right. I've been working on a follow up post on how to avoid these pitfalls. The hope is that it will coincide with the release of the new site design. Risky, I know. I'm not keen on the post title, so I'll have a look at changing it.

I'm not planning on any conferences next year. My current contract makes it very difficult to find any time where I could fit one in, at least until mid 2009.

Thanks for your comments.

hi, Simon, how are you?

I liked a lot of the content of this post. I have a suggestion - I hope you don't mind: I think you're "burying the lead" in this piece. Your post is actually talking about just two issues:

1. 'Style at the expense of content'
2. 'Letting third-party ads/tools/content over-run your own design'

I'd love to see one post focusing on each of those, full of examples, solutions, etc.

I hope life's good.

daniel

ps. going to any UK conferences in 2008?
